The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, has conferred a traditional chieftaincy title on popular social media activist and influencer, Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan.
The monarch installed the activist as the Atayese of Yorubaland during a ceremony held on Wednesday at the royal palace in Iwo.
A video released through the monarch’s official social media platforms showed VeryDarkMan dressed in traditional Yoruba regalia before receiving the title in the presence of palace chiefs and other dignitaries.
The honour comes shortly after the activist accepted an invitation from the Oluwo to visit the palace for discussions on national issues, including security, governance, national unity and other matters affecting the country.
Following the installation, reactions flooded social media, with many users congratulating VeryDarkMan on the recognition, while others questioned the designation of the title.
Some commentators argued that the title should have been limited to “Atayese of Iwoland” rather than extending it to “Atayese of Yorubaland,” while others described the honour as a recognition of the activist’s advocacy and public engagement.
The conferment has since generated widespread debate online over the significance and scope of the traditional title, as discussions continue across social media platforms.
