In a chat with newsmen on Tuesday, Barr. Banji Okunomo, a prominent Ondo State politician and former council boss, has given his support to the reported endorsement of Dr. George-Kelly Alabo Dakorinama by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as the preferred candidate for the governorship of Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.
Okunomo, a prominent Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emphasised that Alabo’s candidacy is not merely a choice of Wike but a decision that resonates with the people of Rivers State. He stated, “The choice of George-Kelly Alabo Dakorinama is a widely accepted one. It is not perceived by the people of Rivers State as merely a choice of Governor Wike.” He highlighted Wike’s extensive consultations leading up to the endorsement, which has garnered support from various interest groups within the state.
Describing Alabo as an experienced political figure, Okunomo remarked, “George-Kelly Alabo is not a political neophyte; he is not a new entrant in politics. He has navigated the complexities of political life and has passed through all the levels of politics in Rivers State.” Alabo’s journey began in student leadership, and he later served as a quantity surveyor at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), showcasing his commitment to public service.
During his tenure at the NDDC, Alabo earned admiration from his colleagues for his accommodating and accessible nature, which Okunomo noted: “The workers of the NDDC held him in high regard due to his nature: very accommodating, accessible, and impactful in the lives of the people.” His generosity transcends tribal and regional boundaries, establishing him as a unifying figure in the state’s political landscape.
After serving as a special adviser to Governor Wike, Alabo played a crucial role in executing various projects that contributed to Wike’s reputation as “Mr. Project.” Okunomo praised Alabo’s contributions, stating, “His impact in terms of project delivery such as the construction of bridges and road cannot be overstated.”
Highlighting Alabo’s loyalty, the political pundit remarked, “He is perceived as a loyalist to the core; he does not betray.” With a solid upbringing and a well-defined character, Alabo’s candidacy is seen as a beacon of hope for the people of Rivers State. Okunomo further asserted, “If he is considered for the governorship of Rivers State, he will perform excellently.”
Alabo’s academic credentials, including a PhD in project management, further bolster his qualifications. Okunomo concluded with confidence, stating, “There is no doubt that he will bring significant benefits to the people of Rivers State, making the state proud.”
