Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, arguing that he lacks the capacity, energy and commitment required to address Nigeria’s mounting challenges.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he questioned Tinubu’s suitability to seek another term in the 2027 presidential election.
According to Obi, the president should step aside and allow a new leader to take responsibility for the country’s affairs.
“The man should just step aside. Yes, he doesn’t have the capacity to do the job,” Obi said, arguing that Tinubu appeared different from the politician who previously governed Lagos State.
He added that Nigeria needed leadership capable of confronting insecurity, poverty, hunger and other pressing national problems.
Obi has repeatedly maintained that effective leadership requires competence, capacity, character and compassion. He has also called on presidential candidates to present their records and policy proposals directly to Nigerians rather than relying on political surrogates.
The former Anambra State governor has placed economic hardship and the welfare of ordinary citizens at the centre of his political message ahead of the 2027 elections.
Tinubu and his administration have defended their economic reforms, arguing that the measures are intended to stabilise the economy and establish the foundation for long-term growth, despite the difficulties experienced by many households.
Obi’s latest criticism adds to the growing political exchanges expected as preparations for the 2027 presidential contest intensify.
