The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has announced plans for a major traditional exercise aimed at confronting kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes in Edo State.
The monarch fixed July 2, 2026, for the spiritual gathering, which he said would focus on invoking ancestral powers against individuals involved in criminal activities across the state.
The decision comes amid growing concerns over rising insecurity and reports of increased kidnapping incidents in several communities.
Speaking during a meeting with traditional priests, priestesses, native doctors and other custodians of indigenous worship at the Benin Palace, the monarch said urgent action had become necessary to protect lives and preserve peace in the kingdom.
Oba Ewuare II said the exercise would serve as a spiritual response to the activities of criminal elements who continue to threaten residents and undermine public safety.
According to the monarch, the initiative is intended to complement ongoing efforts by security agencies and the government, not replace them.
He urged traditional worshippers to unite and deploy lawful traditional means in support of the fight against insecurity.
The Oba expressed concern over the growing wave of violent crimes, saying the kingdom could not continue to watch criminals operate freely while innocent citizens live in fear.
He called on Edo people, both at home and abroad, to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability.
The monarch also directed traditional worshippers to begin a period of prayers and spiritual activities leading up to the July 2 gathering, where the final phase of the exercise will be conducted.
