A 500-level student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Oluwole Oluwaseun, has died in a private hostel in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
The university said it received information about the incident at about 1:30pm on Tuesday, prompting its security team and officials to respond to the scene.
According to Abiodun Olarewaju, the university’s Public Relations Officer, the Nigeria Police was contacted and officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joined the university security team.
Oluwaseun was later taken to the university health centre, where he was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
The university said it handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police, who have commenced investigation.
The Osun State Police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, however, told TheCable that preliminary findings indicated that the student died by suicide.
Ojelabi said Oluwaseun allegedly hanged himself.
The university urged students and members of its community to avoid spreading unverified information while investigations continue.
Vice-Chancellor Simeon Bamire expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues, while urging students facing emotional, financial or personal difficulties to seek appropriate support.
