The Nigeria Union of Teachers has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services from Monday, June 1, over the persistent abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The union said the decision followed growing concerns over the safety of its members and students amid worsening insecurity in the affected communities.
In a directive issued on Sunday, the NUT ordered teachers in public schools across the state to embark on the industrial action until adequate measures are put in place to guarantee the security of teachers, learners and school environments.
The union expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as the continued attacks and abductions within the local government area, noting that the safety of teachers could no longer be guaranteed under the prevailing circumstances.
According to the union, the withdrawal of services became necessary to draw the attention of the government and security agencies to the deteriorating security situation affecting education in the area.
The NUT called on the Oyo State Government and relevant security agencies to take urgent and decisive steps to address the recurring incidents and ensure the safe return of all abducted victims.
The union maintained that protecting the lives of teachers and students must remain a priority, warning that normal academic activities would remain disrupted until tangible action is taken to restore confidence in the safety of schools.
The development is expected to affect academic activities in public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State beginning from Monday.
