Northwest University, Kano State, has expelled 34 students for examination malpractice during the 2024/2025 academic session.
The institution also suspended 18 other students over separate examination-related offences, while 22 students received warning letters after being found guilty of less severe violations of the university’s examination regulations.
The disciplinary actions were approved by the university’s Senate at its 66th regular meeting held on June 17 and 18.
This was contained in a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Unit and signed by the Head of the unit, Abubakar Ibrahim, on behalf of the Registrar, Dr. Isyaku Adamu.
According to the statement, the sanctions followed the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Examination Misconduct after investigating cases of examination malpractice during the academic session.
It noted that the affected students were punished in accordance with the provisions of the university’s Students’ Handbook, which outlines penalties for examination offences.
The university, however, cleared one student, Rukayya Ahmad Zukuri, of all allegations after the Senate reviewed the evidence presented in her case and found no basis for disciplinary action.
“The Senate approved the expulsion of 34 students, the suspension of 18 others and the issuance of warning letters to 22 students in line with the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Examination Misconduct,” the statement read.
The institution reaffirmed its commitment to upholding academic integrity and maintaining the credibility of its examination process.
It urged students to strictly comply with the university’s rules and regulations, warning that acts capable of undermining academic standards would continue to attract appropriate disciplinary sanctions.
The university added that it would not relent in enforcing its examination regulations to preserve discipline, fairness and excellence within the institution.
