The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a nationwide alert, warning Nigerians to prepare for thunderstorms, gusty winds, and potential disruptions to daily activities on Monday.
In its latest weather outlook, the agency indicated that much of the country will experience hot and sunny conditions in the early hours, followed by isolated thunderstorms later in the day.
According to NiMet, parts of northern Nigeria, including Taraba State, are expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds and brief atmospheric disturbances.
For the North-Central region, areas such as Niger State, Kwara State, Benue State, Kogi State, Nasarawa State, and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to experience a transition from calm morning conditions to thunderstorms later in the day.
The agency noted that while some locations may receive rainfall, others could experience strong winds without significant precipitation, urging residents to plan outdoor activities accordingly.
In the southern region, NiMet forecast increased storm activity, with states including Lagos State, Ogun State, Oyo State, Enugu State, Anambra State, Rivers State, and Delta State likely to experience heavy rainfall, lightning, and possible disruptions.
NiMet also issued safety advisories, warning that strong winds may precede rainfall and urging residents to secure loose objects. Motorists were advised to drive cautiously due to reduced visibility and slippery road conditions.
The agency further cautioned against staying in flood-prone areas during heavy rains and advised the public to seek shelter during thunderstorms due to the risk of lightning strikes.
Airline operators were also encouraged to obtain location-specific weather updates from NiMet to ensure safe flight operations.
The warning highlights the need for heightened awareness as changing weather conditions continue to impact various parts of the country.
