NiMet Warns 27 States Of Flash Flood Risk As Peak Rains Intensify

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that 27 states face a high risk of flash flooding between July 1 and July 10 as the country’s peak rainy season gathers momentum.

In a flash flood risk advisory, the agency said persistent rainfall recorded across many parts of Nigeria in June has left the soil heavily saturated, increasing the likelihood of flooding in low-lying communities, urban centres, coastal areas and locations with poor drainage.

According to NiMet, the states at greatest risk are Taraba, Sokoto, Borno, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Adamawa, Kwara, Kogi, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ekiti, Delta, Edo, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa.

The agency warned that the expected heavy rainfall could trigger localized flash floods, especially in flood-prone communities and densely populated cities.

It noted that the flooding could result in traffic gridlock, road closures, transport disruptions, temporary power and telecommunications outages, poor visibility for motorists and aviation operations, waterlogging of farmlands leading to crop losses, and damage to roads, bridges, drainage systems and other public infrastructure.

NiMet also cautioned that stagnant floodwaters may increase the risk of waterborne diseases if proper sanitation measures are not maintained.

To reduce the impact of possible flooding, the agency advised residents to monitor official weather forecasts and flood advisories, clear drains and waterways of debris, secure loose outdoor items, and avoid driving or walking through flooded roads.

It also urged State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), local authorities and community leaders to strengthen preparedness and emergency response efforts.

NiMet stressed that early preparedness, public awareness and swift action remain essential to reducing the risks and impact of flash floods during the 2026 peak rainy season.
