The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has intensified efforts to strengthen meteorological research and innovation aimed at improving service delivery across key sectors of the economy, with a particular focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and aviation research.
Anosike advanced the initiative during a meeting with the Director-General of the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS), KOH LI-NA, on the sidelines of Ecosperity Week 2026 held in Singapore on Thursday, May 21, 2026.
The meeting focused on areas of mutual interest and strategic collaboration between both meteorological agencies, especially in the application of AI to weather forecasting and operational efficiency.
Both officials acknowledged the similarities in tropical weather patterns experienced by Nigeria and Singapore, as well as the important role meteorological services play in supporting aviation operations in both countries.
Discussions explored opportunities for collaboration between MSS and NiMet in accelerating the evaluation and integration of Artificial Intelligence models into meteorological operations. The partnership is expected to improve the speed, accuracy, and downscaling of weather forecasts, thereby enhancing socioeconomic support for sectors including aviation, agriculture, marine services, health, and disaster risk reduction.
NiMet and MSS are both ISO-certified for services rendered to the aviation industry. In recognition of the successful aviation research collaboration between MSS and Singapore’s civil aviation authorities, both agencies also examined the possibility of replicating similar provider-user co-developed solutions within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The meeting further considered issues relating to cost-recovery models and legal frameworks, the deployment of AI to improve manpower productivity, and the importance of Quality Management Systems (QMS) in enhancing operational efficiency and promoting a healthy work environment.
Nigeria and Singapore are members of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). While Nigeria hosts the WMO Office for North, Central and West Africa, Singapore hosts the WMO Regional Office for Asia and the South-West Pacific.
Both Permanent Representatives stressed the importance of global partnerships, cross-border cooperation, and mutual learning in advancing meteorology, improving forecasting accuracy, strengthening capacity building, and delivering life-saving early warning systems worldwide.
