The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has inaugurated a Service Innovation Committee as part of efforts to strengthen research and development, accelerate digital transformation, and enhance service delivery across the Agency.
The committee was inaugurated on Wednesday at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja, in line with the Federal Government’s public service reform agenda and directives from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation aimed at promoting innovation within public institutions.
Speaking during the inauguration on Wednesday, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of Charles Anosike, Professor Charles Anosike, described innovation as a key pillar of the Agency’s current administration, emphasizing its importance in advancing scientific and operational excellence.
According to him, innovation within a scientific institution goes beyond research discoveries and inventions, involving the translation of scientific knowledge into practical solutions that create value and improve public services.
Professor Anosike highlighted several reforms and transformative initiatives implemented since he assumed office.
These include the modernization of operational processes, improvements in weather and climate service delivery, strengthened stakeholder engagement, enhanced staff capacity development, expanded strategic partnerships, and the deployment of digital technologies to improve efficiency and decision-making.
He noted that these measures have contributed significantly to improved organizational performance while fostering an environment that encourages creativity and innovation.
“The establishment of this Committee formalizes our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement,” Anosike stated.
The Director-General explained that the committee would serve as a catalyst for scientific advancement by identifying and promoting innovative climate-smart solutions, supporting research and development activities, and providing evidence-based recommendations to support the Agency’s strategic objectives.
He added that the committee would also advise management on innovation-related policies and initiatives while monitoring the implementation and progress of innovation projects across the Agency.
The inauguration of the Service Innovation Committee marks another step in NiMet’s efforts to build a culture of excellence, professionalism, and innovation.
It also reinforces the Agency’s readiness to respond effectively to emerging technological, environmental, and stakeholder demands in an increasingly dynamic and rapidly evolving world.
