NiMet and Tomorrow.io Host Workshop to Enhance Digital Climate Advisory Service for Farmers

By Paul Joseph

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), in partnership with Tomorrow.io, is hosting a co-design workshop from February 12 to 16, 2026, aimed at refining the Digital Climate Advisory Service (DCAS) Decision Tree.

The event represents a key development in their ongoing collaboration to bolster climate resilience among Nigerian farmers. The workshop seeks to incorporate feedback from farmers and insights from experts into the DCAS Decision Tree, resulting in more customised climate advisories that will assist farmers in making informed decisions regarding planting and harvesting.

Participants from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, and farmer development groups will collaborate to develop a Crop Decision Tree (CDT) framework, with each organisation playing an essential role in the process.

This joint effort will help align NiMet’s localised 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) with specific agricultural practices. The system is intended to produce automated, actionable advisories tailored to various climate scenarios, such as extended dry periods, delayed rainfall, or early seasonal rains.

These advisories will enable farmers to make timely decisions about planting, irrigation, and harvesting, thereby minimising risks associated with adverse weather and ultimately improving agricultural productivity and resilience.

Brian Miranda, a representative of Tomorrow.io’s CEO, expressed gratitude to Prof. Charles Anosike, Director-General of NiMet, for his vision and strategic leadership in establishing NiMet as a prominent National Hydrometeorological Service (NHMS) in Africa.

Miranda noted that NiMet’s integration of artificial intelligence in meteorology will greatly enhance early warning systems for extreme weather events, improving the agency’s capacity to safeguard communities.

In his comments, Prof. Charles Anosike described the new climate advisory initiative as transformative for helping farmers make smarter decisions based on weather data. He stressed that the service is designed to assist farmers in their daily activities by providing straightforward and comprehensible advice.

The five-day workshop will include a technical deep-dive session where participants will collaboratively develop the DCAS Decision Tree—a tool aimed at helping Nigerian farmers make informed choices. This decision tree will be customised to tackle the primary challenges faced by local farmers, integrating expert knowledge and practical feedback to offer actionable guidance for managing crops and livestock based on climate information.
