The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a strategic partnership with AKADEMIYA2063 to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven solutions aimed at strengthening climate resilience, improving weather services and enhancing food security in Nigeria.
The recent collaboration was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), under which both organisations will jointly develop innovative approaches to climate and weather data analytics, climate information services and evidence-based research to address the growing impacts of climate change.
The agreement was signed on behalf of NiMet by its Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, while Dr. Debisi Araba, Managing Director of AKADEMIYA2063, signed for the organisation alongside Dr. Racine Ly, Director of Data Intelligence and Governance and National Representative for Senegal.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Prof. Anosike said the partnership aligns with NiMet’s commitment to integrating emerging technologies into meteorological operations and service delivery.
He disclosed that the agency has already established an Artificial Intelligence Research Team to explore the application of AI and machine learning in weather forecasting, climate services and operational efficiency.
According to him, embracing artificial intelligence is a key step in modernising meteorological services and improving the accuracy of weather predictions for critical sectors, particularly agriculture.
“This partnership with AKADEMIYA2063 will strengthen our efforts to leverage AI and digital innovation in delivering more accurate weather forecasts, timely climate information and efficient meteorological services,” Anosike said.
He added that the collaboration would support Nigeria’s efforts to build resilience against climate change while enhancing decision-making for farmers, policymakers and other stakeholders.
In his remarks, Dr. Araba described the partnership as a major milestone in strengthening Africa’s capacity for data-driven policymaking.
He said combining AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise in data analytics with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities would provide practical solutions to improve climate resilience, agricultural planning and sustainable development across Nigeria.
As part of the agreement, both organisations will collaborate on the application of AI in climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting, early warning systems and evidence-based decision-making to improve agricultural productivity and climate services.
The partners also agreed to establish a Joint Technical Committee that will work closely with NiMet’s AI Research Team to identify priority projects, coordinate implementation of the MoU and develop innovative programmes that support climate resilience, sustainable development and national food security.
The partnership is expected to accelerate the use of advanced technologies in Nigeria’s meteorological sector while strengthening the country’s capacity to respond effectively to climate-related challenges.
