A Nigerian lecturer and researcher at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, Ayodele Odularu, has been found dead at her residence in the Eastern Cape Province, with her family calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Odularu, aged 51, reportedly died on August 16, according to her brother, Gbadebo Odularu, who spoke to journalists on Saturday.
The circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, while a family member, who requested anonymity, said the family does not believe she died from natural causes.
The family has consequently called for an investigation to determine what happened.
In a GoFundMe statement issued by Gbadebo on behalf of the family, Odularu was described as a scholar who devoted her life to research, community service and the pursuit of knowledge.
The family said she was more than a sister, describing her as a cherished daughter, aunt, friend, mentor and scholar who inspired people around her through her compassion, wisdom and generosity.
According to the family, Odularu worked as an independent senior researcher within the University of Fort Hare community, where she contributed to academic research and knowledge development.
The University of Fort Hare held a memorial service in her honour on Thursday.
Her death comes against the backdrop of concerns over attacks targeting Nigerians and other African nationals in parts of South Africa.
Since June, the Federal Government has facilitated the evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa following reports of xenophobic attacks.
A total of 1,716 Nigerians had reportedly been evacuated from the country as part of the government’s response to the situation.
However, there has been no official determination of the circumstances or cause of Odularu’s death.
Her family is now seeking a formal investigation to establish the events surrounding her death and determine whether any wrongdoing occurred.
