Nigerian drug trafficking convict Tony Obina has reportedly been recaptured after escaping from the Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, Liberia.

Obina was among a number of inmates who reportedly broke out of the correctional facility on Sunday, September 20, 2026, following a jailbreak confirmed by Liberia’s Ministry of Justice.

A video shared online by West Trybe News Media showed Obina and another man being escorted back to the prison after they were reportedly located by residents.

In the footage, Obina was seen wearing only blue underwear as he was taken back to the correctional facility.

The Liberian Ministry of Justice confirmed the jailbreak in a statement, saying security agencies had launched an operation to locate and recapture the escaped inmates.

The ministry said the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation was also reviewing prison records to determine the exact number and identities of those who escaped.

It added that the names and other identifying details of the escapees would be released after the verification process to assist security authorities and members of the public in locating them.

Obina had recently been convicted by a 12-member jury at the 13th Judicial Circuit Court in Margibi County in a major drug-trafficking case.

He was convicted alongside two Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency officers, Joe Logan and Lovette Flowers.

The case reportedly involved drugs valued at approximately US$181,008 and more than L$63.2 million.

Reports said Obina and the two officers were apprehended by community members and security authorities while allegedly attempting to flee following the prison break.

The Liberian Ministry of Justice urged residents to remain vigilant and provide information to security agencies about any escaped inmates.

It also warned members of the public against attempting to apprehend or harbour the escapees themselves, as the Joint Security continued its operation.
