The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of National Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Director-General of Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Prof. Charles Anosike, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja to strengthen collaboration on disaster preparedness and climate response.
During the meeting held on May 7, 2026, Mrs. Umar congratulated NiMet for the early release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and commended the agency for maintaining consistent daily weather forecasts and recording operational improvements under Prof. Anosike’s leadership.
She explained that the visit, which included members of the NEMA management team, was aimed at deepening the existing partnership between both agencies in tackling climate-related emergencies across Nigeria.
Mrs. Umar also stressed the need to integrate Nigerian Meteorological Agency into the NEMA Emergency Operations Centre to improve disaster preparedness, early warning coordination, and emergency response nationwide.
Responding, Prof. Charles Anosike welcomed the delegation and appreciated the recognition of NiMet’s role in national development and climate monitoring.
He noted that NiMet, NEMA, and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency are strategic partners working together to address climate-related disasters and improve public safety.
Prof. Anosike further proposed the development of a Nigerian Early Warning System Roadmap to be jointly designed by NiMet, NEMA, and NIHSA to strengthen inter-agency coordination, collaboration, and trust.
At the end of the meeting, both agencies agreed to immediately establish a joint committee to develop and implement the Early Warning System Roadmap for Nigeria.
According to the agencies, the initiative is expected to enhance disaster preparedness and emergency response through coordinated action, clear implementation strategies, and timely dissemination of climate and weather information.
