The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned a Federal High Court ruling directing the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and several other opposition political parties, describing the decision as a dangerous setback for Nigeria’s democratic system.
In a statement issued on Monday, the opposition party urged Nigerians to reject the court order and rally support for the affected political parties, warning that the development could undermine the country’s multi-party democratic structure.
The NDC maintained that the ruling should not be viewed as an attack on individual parties alone but as a broader threat to democratic participation and political pluralism in Nigeria.
“The court order must be condemned by all and sundry. An injury to one is an injury to all,” the party stated.
Expressing solidarity with the affected parties, the NDC alleged that the ruling was part of an attempt by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to weaken opposition voices ahead of future elections.
“We stand in solidarity with these opposition parties and call on every Nigerian to resist the attempt by the rudderless APC to drift our nation into a one-party state,” the statement added.
The reaction followed Monday’s judgment by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately deregister the ADC, Accord Party and other affected political parties from participating in the 2027 general elections.
