The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has clarified his controversial “don’t send money home” comment to Nigerians living abroad, insisting that his message was misrepresented by political opponents.

Obi made the clarification in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Tuesday, October 20, stressing that he was not asking Nigerians in the diaspora to stop supporting their families back home.

The former Anambra State governor acknowledged the sacrifices of Nigerians abroad who send money home to cover essential needs, including school fees, hospital bills, rent and feeding.

He said their contributions and patriotism deserved respect, adding that his concern was the country’s continued dependence on financial support from relatives living overseas.

“My message was twisted,” Obi declared, accusing political opponents of distorting his position.

He added, “I deeply appreciate Nigerians in the diaspora who work tirelessly and make enormous sacrifices to support their families back home.”

Obi maintained that his message was a call for a Nigeria where citizens could meet their basic needs without depending on relatives abroad for survival.

“Political opponents may twist my message, but the truth remains clear: I am not asking Nigerians abroad to abandon their families. I am advocating for a Nigeria that will no longer abandon its own people,” he said.
