Musk’s Grok Blocked From Altering Images After Global Backlash

By Charles Maduka

Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has introduced new restrictions to stop its artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, from altering images of real people following widespread global criticism.

The move comes after concerns were raised over the chatbot’s ability to generate sexualised images of women and children, prompting investigations by authorities in several countries, including the United States. X said it has now taken steps to block users from editing images of people in revealing clothing in places where such actions are considered illegal.

According to the company, new technological measures have been put in place to prevent Grok from manipulating photos of real individuals, including limiting image creation and editing features to paid subscribers only. X said the restriction applies to all users without exception.

The European Commission welcomed the steps taken by X but said it would closely assess whether the measures are sufficient to protect users, especially women and children, from abuse linked to AI-generated content.

Pressure has continued to mount on Musk’s AI company, xAI, with some countries blocking access to Grok entirely while others launched investigations. Rights groups and regulators have warned that the unchecked use of AI tools to create non-consensual and explicit images poses serious legal and ethical risks.
