The Mexican government has approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico, ending an eight-month wait for formal diplomatic clearance.
The approval, known as agrément, was communicated to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs through José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja. The diplomatic document was reportedly delivered to Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at the ministry.
President Bola Tinubu had approved Omokri’s posting in March 2026 as part of a wider list of ambassador-designates. However, he could not formally take up the position until Mexico granted its consent.
Omokri’s diplomatic assignment also includes concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, meaning he will represent Nigeria in the four countries.
The development follows earlier concerns over delays in securing approval for some Nigerian ambassador-designates. In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that diplomatic engagements were continuing with countries that had yet to communicate their decisions on certain appointments.
Omokri, a former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, is known for his political commentary and participation in public debates on Nigerian affairs.
The approval clears a key diplomatic hurdle for his appointment. However, the date for his formal assumption of duties and presentation of credentials has not been confirmed in the reports reviewed.
Agrément is the formal consent required from a receiving country before a nominated diplomat can serve as an ambassador.
