Enzo Maresca has left Chelsea following a total breakdown in his relationship with the club’s hierarchy. The Italian coach exits Stamford Bridge after just 18 months in charge despite enjoying major success on the pitch.
Maresca won the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup with Chelsea and also guided the club back into the Champions League. However, relations behind the scenes had reportedly been strained for some time, with internal tensions eventually leading to his departure.
Concerns over his future intensified after he failed to attend post-match media duties following Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. Although the absence was officially blamed on illness, reports indicate that was not the true reason. In December, Maresca had openly suggested that some people at the club were not fully supporting him or the team.
The situation worsened after Maresca described the period leading up to Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Everton as the most difficult of his time at the club. Crucial talks were later held on New Year’s Day, where a final decision was taken on his future. Chelsea’s recent form, with just one win in seven Premier League matches, also added pressure ahead of a tough league clash against Manchester City.
Attention has now turned to who will replace Maresca, with Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior emerging as a strong candidate. Rosenior, who is part of the BlueCo group, has impressed Chelsea decision-makers after leading the French side to a seventh-place finish in his first season in charge.
