A 24-year-old man, Sunday Ayoko, has been arraigned before an Akungba-Akoko Magistrate’s Court in Ondo State for allegedly stealing 47 tubers of yam ahead of the annual Oka-Akoko Yam Festival.
Ayoko appeared before Magistrate K.A. Kolawole on a two-count charge of theft and malicious damage.
The prosecutor, Inspector Olasunkanmi Boboye, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences on July 6, 2026, at about 12 a.m. at Eluju Ibaka Farm in Oka-Akoko.
According to the prosecution, Ayoko allegedly stole 47 tubers of yam valued at ₦120,000, belonging to one Omoyeni Kehinde.
The prosecutor further alleged that the defendant unlawfully damaged yam plants belonging to the complainant during the incident.
Boboye said the alleged offences contravene Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Kolawole granted Ayoko bail in the sum of ₦200,000 with two sureties and adjourned the case until August 5, 2026, for further hearing.
