Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged Nigerians to remain united and committed to nation-building despite the challenges confronting the country.
Makinde made the call during Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebration held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan, where he was represented by his Deputy, Bayo Lawal.
The governor said Nigerians must rise above religious and ethnic differences, stressing that the country’s diversity should not become a source of division.
He also urged citizens to appreciate the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers, whose struggles led to the country’s independence in 1960.
According to Makinde, the anniversary provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the challenges facing both the country and Oyo State, while reaffirming the importance of democracy, the rule of law and responsible citizenship.
“Unity remains non-negotiable for Nigeria’s progress,” the governor said, noting that the country’s many ethnic groups must learn to live together and draw strength from their diversity.
Makinde also highlighted achievements of his administration in education, security, sports, infrastructure and other sectors, citing initiatives including the Amotekun Corps, road projects, healthcare facilities and the Light Up Oyo State programme.
He congratulated Nigerians on the 66th Independence Anniversary and called for continued peaceful coexistence, saying national development requires citizens to work together despite their differences.
The governor’s message came amid broader Independence Day calls by political and public figures across the country for greater unity, peace and responsible citizenship.
