Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that “federal might” and political intimidation will not determine the outcome of the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence that Nigerians are becoming more politically conscious and ready to defend their votes.
Makinde made the remarks on May 14, 2026, during the Oyo State Tourism Summit held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
The governor said Nigerians were no longer willing to remain passive observers in the democratic process, insisting that voters would freely choose leaders based on conviction rather than political pressure.
“I believe that this election cycle, federal might will not work. It has worked in Ekiti State in both instances but this time around, Nigerians will show politicians pepper,” Makinde said during the event.
The governor also spoke on succession politics in Oyo State, stating that although he could recommend a successor, the final decision would rest with the people of the state. He warned against electing leaders without the competence to govern effectively, arguing that poor leadership could negatively affect the state for years.
Makinde’s comments come amid growing political alignments and increasing debate over the conduct of the 2027 elections across Nigeria.
