Three women have died in a tragic incident that has plunged residents of Gambiri village into grief and mourning.

The incident occurred at about 5:26pm on Monday, 17 August 2026, leaving families and members of the community devastated.

One of the victims, Hauwa Juli, had given birth just six days before her death. Her newborn baby was due to be named on Tuesday, 18 August, a day after her death.

The other victims were Fatima, Hauwa Juli’s daughter, who was pregnant, and Habibah, Hauwa Juli’s sister, who was also pregnant.

During a visit to Gambiri to speak with relatives and residents affected by the incident, the village representative, Abdullahi Galadima recounted how the incident occurred and described the impact it has had on the community.

The grief was particularly evident among the victims’ immediate families.

When our correspondent approached Hauwa Juli’s husband for an interview, he was overcome with emotion and could not speak. He wept as he struggled to come to terms with the loss of his wife.

Habibah’s husband was similarly unable to speak to our correspondent, as he was still deeply affected by the death of his wife.

Hauwa Juli’s son, Auwalu however, spoke to our team and described the profound pain the incident had caused the family, as well as the difficulty they were facing in coping with the loss.

The three women were buried on Tuesday, 18 August, at about 11:00am, in a funeral attended by hundreds of residents of Gambiri and neighbouring communities.

The deaths have left Gambiri in shock, particularly because the three women died in the same incident. The tragedy has also left families mourning the loss of two pregnant women and a mother who had given birth only six days earlier, leaving behind a newborn baby.
