The management of Abia State University, Uturu, has suspended a lecturer in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze, over comments he made on social media about the earnings of university professors and commercial tricycle operators.
Nwaeze was suspended with immediate effect following posts on his Facebook page in which he alleged that some professors at the institution earn less than N400,000 monthly.
The lecturer also claimed that the cumulative earnings of some commercial tricycle operators, popularly known as Keke riders, were higher than the salaries received by professors at the university.
His comments reportedly generated attention on social media, prompting the university management to take disciplinary action.
In a statement announcing the suspension, the institution described the lecturer’s social media posts as inimical to the interests of the university.
The statement was signed by the institution’s Public Relations Officer and Deputy Registrar, Chijioke Nwogu.
The university management also announced the constitution of an investigative panel to examine the matter and determine the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s comments.
The development comes amid continuing concerns in Nigeria over the remuneration and welfare of university lecturers, particularly against the backdrop of rising living costs and demands for improved conditions of service.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine the next steps to be taken by the university management regarding the lecturer.
