Lagos Govt Dismisses Viral Claim of Minor’s Detention at Kirikiri

The Lagos State Government has dismissed allegations circulating in a viral video claiming that a minor, Michael Adekunle, is being unlawfully detained at the Kirikiri Custodial Centre, describing the narrative as misleading and an attempt to manipulate public sympathy.

The clarification came on May 10, 2026, after social media influencer Seaking alleged that the detainee was 14 years old at the time of arrest but was falsely documented as an adult by security authorities.

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), however, maintained that the suspect’s actual name is Michael Adebiyi and that he was 18 years old when arrested in 2022 over an alleged armed robbery case.

According to the state government, legal advice was issued after reviewing the police case file, leading to charges against Adebiyi and another suspect before the Lagos High Court in 2023.

The prosecution has reportedly closed its case, while the matter has now been adjourned to July 1, 2026, for hearing of a no-case submission.

The government further stated that neither the defendant nor his legal representatives had raised any issue concerning age discrepancy throughout the court proceedings. Officials urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims capable of undermining judicial processes and public trust.
