The Anambra State chapter of the Kwankwasiyya Movement has announced the defection of its national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in a move that could reshape emerging political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In an official press statement dated May 1, 2026, and signed by the state chairman of the movement, Revd Pius Ndubueze Ukachukwu, the group described the decision as being “in the best interest of Nigeria” and aligned with its broader objective of meeting the aspirations of citizens.
“We formally announce the defection of our leader… to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). This decision is in the best interest of Nigeria, and aligns with our goal to meet the aspirations of all citizens,” the statement read.
The Anambra chapter also directed all its members across the state to immediately align with the NDC, signalling a coordinated shift in political loyalty within the movement at the state level.
“I therefore direct all Kwankwasiyya Movement Anambra State to move to the Nigerian Democratic Congress,” Ukachukwu stated.
The development, if confirmed at the national level, could have significant implications for Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, particularly given Kwankwaso’s influence and political base across parts of northern Nigeria and within the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
However, there has been no immediate official confirmation from Kwankwaso or his national political structure regarding the reported defection, raising questions about whether the announcement reflects a broader national decision or a state-level position.
Political observers note that defections and early realignments are increasingly shaping the contours of the 2027 elections, as political actors reposition themselves within both established and emerging parties.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement, known for its grassroots mobilisation and loyal following, has remained a notable force in Nigeria’s political space, particularly in recent election cycles.
