Actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo has accepted his appointment as spokesperson to the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, expressing gratitude for the confidence reposed in him by the former Vice President.
Announcing the development in a post on his X account on Thursday, Okonkwo thanked Atiku for the appointment, describing it as an opportunity to serve the nation.
“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me,” he wrote.
Okonkwo praised Atiku’s leadership style, saying the former Vice President favours dialogue, consultation and compromise in resolving disagreements rather than confrontation.
According to him, recent discussions with Atiku and other ADC leaders addressed concerns over the interests of the South-East ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said the talks considered the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, while seeking to ensure that the region’s interests are adequately protected within the party.
“At a dialogue with HE AA and other well-meaning members of the African Democratic Congress, the interests of the South-East have been discussed and guaranteed within the existing challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026, and the realities on the ground,” Okonkwo stated.
Before his appointment, the former Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson had publicly criticised the ADC’s leadership over its choice of vice-presidential candidate, arguing that the South-East was not adequately represented after the position was ceded to the South-South.
Okonkwo also acknowledged the contributions of former ADC National Chairman Dr. Kashim Imam and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, for their roles in strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
He further expressed appreciation to his family, supporters and friends for their prayers and encouragement, asking for continued support as he assumes his new responsibility.
“I still covet your prayers for wisdom, courage, provision and protection needed to carry out this challenging responsibility in the service of our nation,” he added.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Okonkwo is involved in an ongoing legal dispute over comments he allegedly made about Peter Obi. The matter remains before the court, and no ruling has been delivered.
