The Kano State Government has expanded its mass wedding initiative to accommodate eligible Christian couples, with the Hisbah Board confirming that the programme is no longer exclusively for Muslims but is open to all qualified residents regardless of religious affiliation.
Deputy Commander of the board, Sheikh Mujahideen Aminuddeen, disclosed this while explaining preparations for the next edition of the initiative, popularly known as “Auren Gata” (marriage for the privileged).
He revealed that three Christian couples participated in the previous mass wedding held in October 2023, adding that although preparations are ongoing for the next exercise, it is yet to be confirmed whether Christian couples have registered for this year’s edition.
According to Aminuddeen, the programme caters to widows, widowers, divorcees, bachelors and spinsters, with the aim of making marriage more accessible to people facing financial challenges.
He said the initiative has continued to strengthen family values, reduce immoral behaviour and support vulnerable families by helping intending couples overcome the high cost of marriage.
The official noted that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is giving priority to orphans and underprivileged families, stressing that beneficiaries are selected only after thorough screening and verification.
Several stakeholders praised the initiative, describing it as a social intervention capable of promoting family stability, reducing divorce and discouraging social vices among young people.
Residents also said the programme has enabled many financially disadvantaged men and women to marry, although some urged authorities to ensure beneficiaries are genuinely committed to building lasting homes.
Economist Dr. Abdulsalam Kani said the initiative could contribute to poverty reduction if beneficiaries receive sustainable economic empowerment, noting that financial hardship remains one of the leading causes of divorce in northern Nigeria.
Similarly, sociologist Dr. Muhammad Hadi-Musa described the mass wedding as more than a ceremonial exercise, saying it represents a broader social development strategy that encourages affordable marriages and supports low-income families.
The Kano State Government has earmarked ₦1.5 billion for the upcoming mass wedding, which is expected to benefit 1,500 couples.
Hisbah Commander-General Sheikh Aminu Daurawa said each groom will receive ₦100,000 as dowry support, while each bride will get ₦100,000 as business empowerment. Beneficiaries will also receive household items, including beds, mattresses, furniture and food supplies.
He added that intending couples are undergoing medical screening, including HIV, hepatitis B, pregnancy and genotype tests, while only applicants with a means of livelihood and suitable accommodation will qualify for the programme.
According to him, about 5,000 people applied, with 3,000 beneficiaries (1,500 couples) expected to participate.
