On Thursday, 26 February 2026, the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) conducted a high-profile asset recovery operation in Kano City, seizing several official vehicles from five former commissioners (including Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso) the NNPP national leader. The move came about a month after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on 26 January 2026.
The agency said it retrieved the vehicles because the ex-officials failed to return government-owned cars after resigning their cabinet posts, despite repeated official letters from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government. Among them were the former Commissioners for Security (Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Umar), Youth and Sports (Mustapha Kwankwaso), Science & Technology, Humanitarian Affairs and Special Projects.
PCACC Chairman Sa’idu Yahaya defended the enforcement action as a legal duty to protect public assets, not political persecution, noting that administrative channels were exhausted before court-authorised recovery. The operation underscores Kano’s heightened focus on accountability and enforcement of exit protocols for public property, especially amid ongoing political realignments following the governor’s party switch.
