…Says rising insecurity is a national embarrassment, threatens public confidence in military
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Chairman of Eagle FM, Asiwaju Kunle Kalejaye, has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a national emergency on banditry, kidnapping and other forms of terrorism threatening the country’s security.
Kalejaye, in his Democracy Day message, said the worsening insecurity across the country had become a national embarrassment and required urgent and decisive action from the Federal Government.
The legal luminary warned that the activities of bandits, kidnappers and terrorists were gradually undermining public confidence in Nigeria’s security architecture and diminishing the reputation of the nation’s armed forces.
According to him, criminal elements have become increasingly bold, extending their operations from remote communities to major towns and cities across the country.
He noted that the growing trend of criminals disguising themselves in military uniforms while carrying out attacks was further damaging public trust in the Nigerian Army.
“The Federal Government must adopt more decisive and far-reaching measures to halt the escalating security crisis before it completely undermines the foundations of our nation’s security architecture,” he said.
Kalejaye argued that although efforts were being made by security agencies to tackle insecurity, such measures might not achieve the desired results without a clear national declaration demonstrating Nigeria’s resolve to defeat terrorism.
He maintained that declaring a national emergency on terrorism would send a strong message that the country rejects violence and is prepared to deploy all available resources to confront the menace.
The Senior Advocate further urged the Federal Government to formulate concrete strategies aimed at dismantling criminal networks and restoring confidence in security institutions.
He stressed that protecting lives and property remains one of the primary constitutional responsibilities of government and requires proactive rather than reactive measures.
According to him, threats to national security must be identified and neutralised before they become too powerful to contain.
Kalejaye also expressed concern that celebrating democracy amid persistent insecurity diminishes the essence of democratic governance and projects a negative image of Nigeria to the international community.
“It is left to President Tinubu to save our nation at this perilous time,” he stated.
He therefore reiterated his appeal to the President to immediately declare a national emergency on terrorism and related crimes as part of efforts to restore peace and security across the country.
