Anthony Joshua produced one of the most dramatic victories of his professional career, battling back from two first-round knockdowns to stop Albanian heavyweight Kristian Prenga in the second round of an emotional comeback fight in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The former world heavyweight champion endured a nightmare start, hitting the canvas just 20 seconds into the contest after Prenga landed a powerful uppercut. Joshua was dropped again later in the opening round, raising fears that one of boxing’s biggest upsets was about to unfold.
However, the British star showed remarkable resilience and composure to turn the fight around. After weathering the storm, Joshua found his rhythm in the second round, landing a devastating right hand that sent Prenga crashing to the canvas before the referee stepped in to wave off the contest.
The victory improves Joshua’s professional record to 30 wins and four defeats, while keeping alive his long-anticipated blockbuster clash with fellow British heavyweight Tyson Fury.
The bout marked Joshua’s first appearance since recovering from injuries sustained in a tragic car accident in Nigeria in December, which claimed the lives of his close friends Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.
Clearly emotional after the fight, Joshua dedicated the victory to his late friends.
“It wasn’t just about power. That was spirit. That was Latz, that was Sina and their families,” Joshua said, struggling to hold back tears. “It’s been a very difficult time.”
The emotional tribute was reflected throughout the event, with Joshua wearing his friends’ names on his ring attire, while the canvas also bore the inscription “My Brother’s Keeper” in their honour.
Attention quickly shifted to the long-awaited showdown with Tyson Fury, with both fighters now having recorded comeback victories. Although Fury was absent from the arena despite widespread speculation he might attend, Joshua expressed his readiness for the clash.
“I respect everything Tyson Fury has achieved, but we’re both here now. I believe the fans deserve this fight,” he said.
Promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed that contracts for the blockbuster showdown have already been signed, although the venue and official date are yet to be announced. The contest is widely expected to take place later this year, with Saudi Arabia and the United States among the potential hosts.
Joshua’s performance may not have been flawless, but his determination and ability to recover from adversity demonstrated the resilience that has defined much of his career.
For boxing fans, the dramatic comeback not only revived Joshua’s momentum but also ensured that one of the sport’s most anticipated heavyweight rivalries remains firmly on course.
