Tensions between Israel and Iran intensified on Wednesday after Israel declared that any individual appointed as Iran’s next supreme leader would be considered a target for elimination.
Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, issued the stark warning, stating that “any leader” selected by the Iranian regime would be “an unequivocal target for elimination.”
Katz further revealed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to prepare and, if necessary, deploy all available means to carry out such an operation.
The statement follows reports in Iranian local media suggesting that Mojtaba Khamenei could emerge as a possible successor to his father, Ali Khamenei, Iran’s long-serving supreme leader.
Ali Khamenei has led Iran since 1989 and remains the country’s highest political and religious authority. The process of selecting a supreme leader rests with the Assembly of Experts, a powerful clerical institution tasked with appointing and overseeing the position.
On Tuesday, Israel reportedly struck a building linked to the Assembly of Experts, marking a significant escalation by targeting an institution central to Iran’s political system.
The latest exchange of threats has heightened concerns of a broader regional conflict, with both nations continuing to trade warnings and engage in military actions.
Security analysts warn that direct threats against Iran’s highest leadership position could trigger retaliatory measures, potentially drawing in allied groups and regional actors.
Diplomatic observers say the rhetoric represents one of the most direct Israeli threats against Iran’s political structure in recent years, underscoring the deepening hostility between the two countries.
As tensions continue to mount, the international community is closely monitoring developments amid fears that further escalation could destabilize an already volatile Middle East.
