The United States confirmed that six U.S. service members were killed by an Iranian retaliatory drone strike on a makeshift U.S. tactical operations centre at Port Shuaiba in Kuwait, marking the first American military deaths in the escalating US-Israel conflict with Iran.
The confirmation came on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, amid intense regional hostilities that have now entered Day Five after Washington and Jerusalem launched coordinated strikes against Iranian targets.
The drone attack occurred on Sunday, March 2, hitting a trailer-style tactical centre used by U.S. forces to support operations in the wider Middle East theatre. Four of the deceased have since been publicly identified as members of the 103rd Sustainment Command (Army Reserve) from Iowa, Nebraska, Florida and Minnesota.
This deadly strike underscores how the conflict, triggered by U.S. and Israeli air and missile campaigns against Iranian military infrastructure and leadership, has broadened into neighbouring states hosting American troops. Regional air defences in the Gulf states have been on high alert as Iranian missiles and drones target U.S. and allied positions, prompting evacuations of diplomatic staff and heightened security alerts.
The why is rooted in Tehran’s strategy of retaliation: Iranian forces have sought to counter U.S. and Israeli military pressure by striking logistical hubs and foreign bases, signalling an intent to impose costs on American forces far from Iranian soil and to deter further attacks.
