Iran has stated that it will only contemplate a ceasefire with the United States and Israel if robust security guarantees are provided to ensure that attacks on the country will not occur again.
Kazem Gharibabadi made this assertion, emphasizing that a ceasefire would be pointless without clear assurances that military actions against Iran would cease permanently.
As reported by the Iranian newspaper Shargh, Gharibabadi highlighted that any agreement to end the conflict must include guarantees against future aggressive actions toward Iran.
“If a ceasefire is to be established or the war is to conclude, there must be a guarantee that aggressive actions against Iran will not happen again,” he stated.
The Iranian official also maintained that the country did not initiate the conflict. “The Islamic Republic of Iran was not the instigator of the war and aggression,” he remarked.
Gharibabadi defended Iran’s recent missile strikes, asserting that they were conducted under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which permits nations to defend themselves when faced with an armed attack. He pointed out that Iran views its actions as legitimate self-defense under international law.
In the meantime, several countries are reportedly engaged in behind-the-scenes efforts to de-escalate tensions and help resolve the conflict. These mediation efforts are said to involve China, Russia, and France, along with other regional players.
Diplomatic sources indicate that the discussions aim to prevent further escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
