United States President Donald Trump says Iran has agreed to resume negotiations with United States following recent joint military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets.
Speaking in a telephone interview with The Atlantic, Trump said Iranian leaders had reached out for renewed discussions and that he had accepted the proposal.
“They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk,” Trump told journalist Michael Scherer, adding that Tehran delayed negotiations despite earlier opportunities.
“They should have done it sooner. They waited too long,” he said.
Trump also claimed that several Iranian officials previously involved in diplomatic engagements were among those killed during the military operation.
“Most of those people are gone. Some of the people we were dealing with are gone, because that was a big hit,” he added.
The development follows coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel targeting multiple locations across Iran, which reportedly killed the country’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, alongside senior military commanders, including armed forces chief Abdolrahim Mousavi.
Reports gathered by Starnews NG indicate that members of Khamenei’s family were also among those killed during the operation.
Following the Supreme Leader’s death, Iran is said to be operating under transitional leadership pending the selection of a successor by the Assembly of Experts.
Iranian authorities have since declared a national mourning period, while regional monitors estimate that more than 200 people have been killed and over 700 injured since the escalation began.
In Israel, officials say at least nine people have died and more than 100 others were injured in retaliatory missile and drone attacks launched by Iran.
Trump did not disclose which Iranian officials are directly coordinating the renewed diplomatic outreach to Washington.
The latest developments signal a potential diplomatic opening amid escalating military tensions across the Middle East.
