IPOB Declares May 30 Sit-at-Home for Biafra Day Commemoration

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a sit-at-home across the South-East region on May 30 to commemorate Biafra Day and honour fallen heroes, heroines, and victims of the Nigerian civil war.

The declaration was announced on May 11, 2026, in a statement issued by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, who described the day as a solemn period of remembrance for those who lost their lives during the Biafran struggle between 1967 and 1970.

According to the group, all markets, schools, businesses, and public activities across towns and communities in the South-East are expected to remain shut during the observance. IPOB also urged residents in the diaspora to participate in memorial activities in honour of those it described as Biafran heroes and heroines.

The annual May 30 commemoration has remained a sensitive issue in Nigeria’s South-East region, often drawing mixed reactions from residents, political leaders, and security agencies. In previous years, some groups and state authorities distanced themselves from similar directives, while security agencies maintained heightened surveillance across the region.

The latest declaration comes amid continuing legal and political attention surrounding IPOB and its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
