The Independent National Electoral Commission has unveiled 12 governorship candidates and their running mates for the 2027 Kwara State governorship election, formally setting the stage for a multi-party contest.
The candidates were unveiled at INEC’s office in Ilorin, the state capital, on Saturday, with the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party among the parties fielding candidates.
The APC is represented by the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, with Bello Mubarak Salau as his running mate.
Danladi emerged as the APC candidate after the party’s governorship primary held in May and chaired by former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro.
PDP, SDP lead opposition challenge
The PDP will contest the election with Bolakale Kawu as its governorship candidate and Fawenu Corlenius as his running mate.
The Social Democratic Party has also fielded Apaokagi Salahudeen, a former candidate for Kwara Central Senatorial District in the 2023 election, with Kolawole Thawphic as his running mate.
Other parties in the race are the Action Democratic Party, Accord Party, Nigeria Democratic Congress, Action Peoples Party, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Movement, National Democratic Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance and New Nigeria Peoples Party.
12 candidates enter race
The candidates and their running mates are:
- APC: Yakubu Danladi-Salihu — Bello Mubarak Salau
- PDP: Bolakale Kawu — Fawenu Corlenius
- SDP: Apaokagi Salahudeen — Kolawole Thawphic
- ADP: Adeshina Ajisafe — Suleiman Jubri
- Accord: Seko Jubril Gure — Michael Jolayemi
- NDC: Yinka Ajia — Olayide Olawuyi
- APP: Omotoso Bamidele Olaitan — Aremu Toyin Wahab
- AA: Kolo Ezekiel — Olanipekun Ismail Olabode
- APM: Oluwole Tolu — Jaiyeola Motunrayo
- NDP: Decean Shola Victor Abioye — Issa Salihu
- APGA: Sule Ajayi — Afolabi Moses Folorunsho
- NNPP: Lamidi Isiaka Akanni — Grace Abosede Ogundele
