Afrobeats superstar Davido has sparked debate after claiming he is the only child of a billionaire to have built both a globally recognised brand and substantial personal wealth independent of his family’s fortune.
Speaking during an appearance on the Vibes Podcast, the award-winning singer reflected on the challenges of succeeding despite coming from an affluent background, arguing that such achievements are often overlooked.
According to Davido, society tends to celebrate “grass-to-grace” stories, where individuals rise from humble beginnings to become successful, but pays little attention to those born into wealthy families who still go on to establish their own identities through hard work and talent.
He said earning public acceptance and proving oneself can be just as demanding for someone raised in privilege.
“They love the grass-to-grace story, the young boy that was poor and became rich. But which other billionaire’s child do you know in the world—not just in Africa—that has made a name for himself and also made a lot of money? You can’t count, you can’t name one apart from me,” Davido said.
The singer’s remarks have since generated conversations on social media, with many weighing in on his assessment of success, privilege and the challenges of stepping out of the shadow of a wealthy family.
Davido, whose father is billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, has built one of Africa’s most successful music careers, earning international acclaim through hit songs, sold-out concerts and major collaborations with global artistes. Despite his privileged upbringing, he has often maintained that his achievements are the result of years of dedication and consistency in the entertainment industry.
