Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo (Sunday Igboho) has issued a controversial warning to opposition politicians Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, cautioning them not to campaign in Nigeria’s South-West region ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In a viral video circulated on Monday, March 16, 2026, Igboho declared that supporters of the two opposition figures would face resistance if they attempt to mobilize voters in the predominantly Yoruba region. He reportedly stated that anyone planning to campaign for the duo in the area would be confronted, insisting that the region remains firmly aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Igboho also pledged strong backing for Tinubu’s continued leadership, saying the president deserves a second term in 2027 and even suggesting that Nigerians might urge him to remain in power beyond the constitutional eight-year limit.
The remarks have triggered political debate across Nigeria, particularly as the country’s 1999 Constitution limits presidents to two terms. Analysts warn that inflammatory rhetoric tied to ethnic or regional dominance could deepen Nigeria’s fragile political divisions as early maneuvering for the 2027 elections intensifies.
Igboho, known for his advocacy for a Yoruba self-determination movement, returned to Nigeria earlier in 2026 after years of legal battles and exile, making his recent political statements even more significant in the nation’s evolving political discourse.
