I Won’t Be Intimidated — Seun Replies Wike Over Shooting Threat

Television presenter Seun Okinbaloye has said he remains “unafraid” following controversial remarks made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, which sparked widespread public concern.

The minister had earlier drawn criticism after suggesting he would have “broken his television screen and shot” the journalist over comments made during a broadcast about the risks a one-party system could pose to Nigeria’s democracy. The statement triggered backlash from civil society groups, including Amnesty International, which condemned the remark as “reckless and violent”.

Responding on Sunday, Okinbaloye stood firm, stressing that such rhetoric has no place in a democratic society where differing opinions should be respected.

“Our democracy is at risk if we allow a one-way direction in the ballot,” he said. “This is not aimed at the opposition or the ruling party alone, but at all Nigerians who are committed to the growth and development of our nation.”

In a measured tone, the broadcaster also disclosed that the minister had personally reached out to him in the wake of the controversy.

“I received a call from the honourable minister, who clarified that his intention was not as conveyed,” Okinbaloye revealed. “While that is acknowledged, it remains important to emphasise that violent rhetoric or threats are never appropriate responses to dissent in any democratic setting.”

Despite the incident, Okinbaloye insisted he would not be intimidated.

“Let me be clear: I am not afraid, and I will not be cowed,” he said. “We may disagree, and as humans we may err, but disagreement must never deteriorate into hostility or harm.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to journalism and public accountability, adding that he would continue to ask difficult questions and hold those in positions of power to account.
