Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has expressed concerns that he may soon face arrest by the Federal Government.
El-Rufai made this statement during an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, indicating that recent developments suggest he could be the next victim of what he describes as political intimidation targeting opposition figures.
The former governor, who recently switched from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), noted that several of his close associates have already been detained.
“Four individuals we collaborated with in Kaduna have been arrested; it’s only a matter of time before they come for me as well,” he stated.
While he has not yet been arrested, El-Rufai interprets the detention of his colleagues as a warning that he could be next.
He further claimed that politicians are being coerced into either joining the APC or remaining within the ruling party. He believes that many political choices are now driven by fear and the need for survival rather than genuine belief.
El-Rufai served as the governor of Kaduna State for eight years under the APC. In recent months, he has been openly critical of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the leadership of the ruling party.
His remarks come at a time when former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, is also facing arrest and trial.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has accused Malami of abuse of office and money laundering, and he was subsequently rearrested on new allegations related to terrorism financing.
Malami, who is also reported to have switched from the APC to the ADC, has denied all charges, labeling them as a political witch-hunt linked to his defection and opposition stance.
As of the time this report was published, there had been no official response from the Federal Government or the APC regarding El-Rufai’s allegations.
