‘I Haven’t Drunk Water in 48 Years’ — Warren Buffett

By George Omagbemi

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has reportedly told fellow billionaire Bill Ackman that he has not drunk water for 48 years, sparking renewed interest in the legendary investor’s unusual eating and drinking habits.

According to Intel Region, Ackman shared the anecdote during an appearance on the Equity Mates Investing Podcast, recalling a dinner he hosted for Buffett several years ago.

Ackman said he had stocked up on Cherry Coke, knowing it was Buffett’s preferred drink. When he offered his guest still or sparkling water, Buffett reportedly declined and requested his favourite soft drink instead.

Asked whether he drank water, Buffett allegedly replied: “Bill, I haven’t had water in 48 years.”

The claim is based on Ackman’s recollection of a past conversation, not a recent statement directly verified by Buffett. It also does not establish that Buffett consumes no other fluids or that the remark was intended literally.

Buffett, who turned 96 this year, has long been known for his fondness for Coca-Cola and sugary foods. In 2015, he said the drink accounted for about a quarter of his daily calorie intake.

His preference for Cherry Coke dates back decades. He announced his switch to the drink after 48 years of loyalty to another soft drink in a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letter in 1986.

Health experts generally recommend water as a healthy way to stay hydrated. Buffett’s reported habits should not be treated as medical advice.
