The political landscape of Ondo State has been decisively reshaped this week with the strategic movement of two veteran lawmakers into the African Democratic Congress ( ADC ). By securing the party’s tickets ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator Nicholas Tofowomo and Senator Ayo Akinyelure have effectively disrupted the political dynamics in the state, posing a significant challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
As a result, the upcoming senatorial contest has transformed from a mere battle of party logos into a crucial referendum on the current serving senators’ performance and representation. This shift indicates that the election will not be an easy ride for the APC, as voters are increasingly scrutinising past performances and seeking alternatives in the face of perceived shortcomings.
For the ruling APC, the entry of these two political heavyweights presents an immediate structural challenge. In Ondo Central, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, popularly known as “Allover”, retains a deep-seated popularity rooted in his previous tenures. His legislative legacy is heavily associated with direct human capital development, employment facilitation, and widespread empowerment schemes.
Across the streets of Akure, Idanre, and surrounding local governments, a significant segment of the electorate openly argues that subsequent representations have struggled to match the volume of tangible benefits delivered during his time in the red chamber. By stepping back onto the ballot under the ADC banner, Akinyelure offers a visible alternative for voters who feel that the developmental momentum in Ondo Central has slowed.
A similar high-stakes dynamic is unfolding in Ondo South. Senator Nicholas Tofowomo’s formal affirmation as the ADC senatorial candidate reintroduces a seasoned strategist into the coastal district’s political equation. Tofowomo boasts an established, multi-layered political network built from his performance indicators and unbeatable track records of achievements as the distinguished Senator of Ondo South in the 9th Assembly. His campaign relies on a clear and easily communicated track record of rural infrastructure projects and community intervention programmes which strike a chord in the hearts of the electorate till now.
With Ondo South experiencing recent political shifts including a pending legislative transition following Jimoh Ibrahim’s international appointment, Tofowomo’s presence completely destabilises any calculations the APC may have made regarding an easy victory in the zone.
The true mathematical shift in this race lies in how the ADC is positioning itself. Rather than acting as a minor opposition party, the ADC is rapidly becoming a grand coalition for aggrieved, experienced politicians and dissatisfied voters from both the APC and PDP.
EA By pairing Tofowomo and Akinyelure with other grassroots mobilisers, such as Niyi Akingunola in the Ondo East/West Federal Constituency, the ADC is consolidating the anti-incumbency vote. Instead of the opposition splitting its strength, the previously scattered factions are uniting behind candidates who possess independent name recognition and their own campaign funding.
While the ruling APC possesses immense institutional advantages, including state resources and the backing of the executive governor, party machinery alone may not suffice this time. The candidacies of Akinyelure and Tofowomo compel the upcoming election to be fought on the basis of historical scorecards. If the APC fields candidates who rely purely on party supremacy rather than personal popularity, they will face an uphill battle defending their record against two battle-tested generals who have already proven their ability to win, hold, and reward their senatorial districts.
