Veteran British actor Anthony Head, celebrated for memorable roles in television hits including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ted Lasso, Merlin and Little Britain, has died at the age of 72.
Head passed away peacefully from complications related to pneumonia while surrounded by family, according to a statement released by his daughters, actresses Emily Head and Daisy Head.
“It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters,” they said, describing their father as an extraordinary man whose work touched countless people around the world.
Head gained international recognition in the late 1990s for his portrayal of Rupert Giles, the wise mentor to Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. His performance made him a fan favourite and established him as a respected figure in television drama.
Beyond Buffy, he enjoyed a diverse career, playing King Uther Pendragon in Merlin, appearing as the Prime Minister in Little Britain, and portraying the manipulative Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso.
His film and television credits also included The Iron Lady, Doctor Who, The Inbetweeners, Motherland and Silent Witness.
Among the first to pay tribute was Sarah Michelle Gellar, who starred opposite Head in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Sharing photographs from their years together on set, she thanked his daughters for “sharing their dad with the world” and reflected on the profound impact he had on her life.
Fellow Buffy actor David Boreanaz remembered Head as a kind and generous soul, while James Marsters described him as a steady presence and one of the finest actors in the cast.
Little Britain co-creator Matt Lucas praised Head’s warmth and professionalism, recalling how fortunate the production team felt when he agreed to join the series.
Meanwhile, Ted Lasso actor and writer Brett Goldstein said Head possessed the rare ability to convincingly portray a villain on screen while being one of the kindest people off it.
Before achieving global fame, Head became a familiar face in Britain through the hugely popular Gold Blend coffee advertisements of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Alongside actress Sharon Maughan, he starred in a series of commercials whose romantic storyline captured public attention and became a cultural phenomenon.
Maughan described herself as “broken-hearted” by the news, recalling their friendship and the joy of working together.
Born in Camden, London, in 1954, Head trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and built a distinguished career across television, film, radio and theatre. He also appeared in productions of The Rocky Horror Show, Godspell and Chess.
His death comes just months after the loss of his long-time partner, animal welfare campaigner Sarah Fisher, who died in December 2025.
Remembered for his talent, generosity and enduring screen presence, Anthony Head leaves behind a body of work that spans more than four decades and continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
