The Zamfara State Hisbah Commission has arrested a cleric over allegations of engaging in immoral conduct and allegedly sending explicit materials to a young man through mobile communication.
According to reports, the suspect was arrested in Gusau following an investigation conducted by the commission into allegations made against him.
In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the commission, Umar Haruna Tsafe, the agency said preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect admitted to the allegations during interrogation.
The statement further disclosed that the cleric allegedly told investigators that he had been involved in such acts since his days at GTC Maru secondary school.
Chairman of the commission, Umar Hassan Gusau, was said to have counselled the suspect on the moral and religious implications of the alleged conduct and reminded him of the consequences prescribed by Islamic teachings.
The commission stated that the suspect was later transferred to a Sharia Court for further investigation and necessary legal action.
The agency also reaffirmed its commitment to taking action against acts it considers contrary to religious teachings and societal values in the state.
