Hon. Mohammed Kasim, the newly elected chairman of the Gwagwalada Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, has strongly denied rumours that he has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Kasim the winner of the Area Council election held on February 21, 2026, where he received 22,165 votes, defeating APC candidate Yahaya Shehu, who got 17,788 votes. The election was reported to be competitive but peaceful.
On February 24, Kasim described the defection claims as “baseless and misleading,” stating that there has been “no meeting, no negotiation, no discussion, and no intention whatsoever to defect.”
Kasim reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP and promised to focus on grassroots development, youth empowerment, and the wellbeing of the community. His message aims to counter the harmful effects of misinformation on democracy and political stability.
His clear stance comes after a closely fought Area Council election, where the PDP’s victory in Gwagwalada is notable, especially as the APC won in five other councils in the FCT.
