Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has denied Kano Emir’s removal and affirmed that Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II will remain in his position, rejecting any suggestions that political changes might result in his removal.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, stated that there are no plans, agreements, or discussions regarding Sanusi II’s removal from the throne.
He emphasized that the emir was legally reinstated following the repeal of the emirates law, and the situation remains unchanged.
Bature reassured that Sanusi’s position is secure, even after the governor’s recent switch to the All Progressives Congress. He highlighted that the traditional institution is non-partisan and should not be involved in political speculation.
He characterized the rumors as unfounded and propagated by individuals who do not wish for peace in Kano State. He urged residents to disregard these claims and concentrate on unity and stability.
Regarding the ongoing dispute with former Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, the government stated that it has not initiated any discussions with his faction. However, the administration called on Bayero and his supporters to prioritize peace and refrain from making reinstatement claims.
Kano has been embroiled in a prolonged emirate crisis, with both Sanusi II and Bayero claiming the throne. Sanusi was ousted in 2020 but was reinstated in May 2024 after the state government repealed the law that established additional emirates.
Despite this, Bayero continues to assert his claim, causing significant divisions within the state and the royal family.
Recent political shifts, including Governor Yusuf’s defection to the APC, have sparked renewed speculation about the emirate issue. However, the governor has categorically dismissed this, asserting that the matter is resolved.
Bature also mentioned that the emirate issue was not part of any political negotiations and urged Bayero to avoid political manipulation for the sake of peace and development in Kano.
