Thousands of pensioners in Katsina State are set to receive higher monthly payments following the approval of a new minimum pension by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, in a move aimed at improving the welfare of retired public servants amid rising living costs.
The approval, raises the minimum monthly pension from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000, representing a 100 per cent increase.
The state government said the decision reflects its commitment to enhancing the welfare of retirees who dedicated years of service to the state.
According to the government, the new pension structure is expected to cushion the effects of inflation and the increasing cost of living on elderly citizens, many of whom have struggled to meet basic needs under the previous payment regime. Officials added that the increment forms part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening the state’s pension system and ensuring greater financial security for retirees.
Governor Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of both serving and retired workers, noting that the government will continue to implement policies designed to improve livelihoods and promote social protection.
Pensioners and labour stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing the increase as a positive step while urging the government to ensure prompt and consistent payment of pensions.
